Is Your Mindset Serving You Well?

Welcome to “Success Sundays,” where I, Harrison Wilder, corporate strategist and entrepreneur, share insights designed to help you unlock your full potential as a leader. With an Executive MBA from George Washington University and years of experience managing multimillion-dollar companies, I’m here to provide practical, actionable guidance that goes beyond traditional tactics and strategies.

Why Mindset Matters

One thing I’ve learned through years of working with top-level executives is that success goes beyond merely learning tactics and strategies. You can implement every successful technique in the book, but without the right mindset, you’ll never achieve lasting results. Mindset is critical—it’s the lens through which we filter our thoughts, the compass guiding our actions, and the foundation for all meaningful progress.

Have you ever taken a moment to listen to your mind and the whirlwind of thoughts within it? Our minds are powerful machines, constantly analyzing, questioning, and making predictions. Yet, it’s important to remember that you are not your mind. Your mind is a tool—a relentless analyzer. You have the power to choose which thoughts to dwell on, which ones to let go, and which ones to let shape your life.

Filtering Your Thoughts: The Key to Success

Successful people know how to filter out thoughts that don’t serve them and focus on the ones that will propel them toward their goals. I have a friend I’ll call “Unleash Larry.” Larry has mastered this art; he knows how to concentrate on the thoughts that empower him. On the other hand, “Conf Von Carl” often finds himself dwelling on doubts, fears, and insecurities that keep him from achieving his potential. Which mindset do you want to cultivate?

If you’re not experiencing the life you want, there may be room for improvement in your mindset. I’ll be the first to admit that addressing mindset wasn’t easy for me either. I avoided it for a long time, thinking it was too hard or too abstract. But I discovered that it’s not just about sheer willpower—it’s about installing mental filters that operate at the subconscious level, making mindset shifts feel almost automatic.

My Journey to a New Belief System

My background is steeped in a mindset of caution—raised by a family of lawyers, I grew up trained to foresee every possible problem in any situation. While this approach served me well in my career, it didn’t do much for my relationships. I was closed off, and guarded, and found it difficult to let people in.

Then one summer at a camp, a classmate playfully challenged my overly serious demeanor. Her lightheartedness and easy-going nature sparked a new perspective in me. For the first time, I realized that relationships don’t need to be fraught with caution; each one has its purpose, even if that purpose sometimes includes hardship or loss. This one belief transformed how I approached relationships. No longer did I fixate on potential pitfalls. I began seeing every relationship as an opportunity to learn, grow, and heal.

Replacing Stories: The Power of Self-Told Narratives

Here’s a powerful truth I’ve discovered: It’s often more effective to replace the negative stories we tell ourselves than to attempt controlling every thought. I found that when I surrounded myself with empowering beliefs and constructive stories, my mindset shifted naturally. Telling yourself a story that serves you can replace years of “mindset work.”

The best part is that you get to choose the stories you tell yourself. Why not choose stories that empower you, lift you up, and bring you closer to your goals?

Embracing the Stories of Success: The Success Challenge

The most successful people I know tell themselves specific, empowering stories. These beliefs are often what separate those living the “unleashed life” from those who feel constrained by self-doubt. So here’s a challenge for you this week: immerse yourself in the stories and beliefs of successful people. Seek out environments and individuals who radiate success. Surround yourself with the stories that drive successful people forward, and watch as your mindset starts to shift.

I encourage you to take control of the stories you tell yourself and let them shape your journey to success. Your mindset is more than just a tool—it’s your ally in building the life you want. And remember, if you have questions, drop them in the comments. I’d love to address them in future episodes.

Until next time, keep focusing on those empowering stories, and I’ll see you next week.
