Why So Many Christians Are Broke

In the Gospel of John, Jesus says, “The enemy has come to steal, kill, and destroy. But I have come that you may have life and have it abundantly.” If Jesus came to bring abundant life, why are so many Christians struggling financially? Today, we’ll explore this paradox.

Welcome to Success Sundays with Harrison Wilder. I’m your host, Harrison Wilder, a corporate strategist and entrepreneur with an executive MBA from George Washington University. I’ve managed multi-million dollar companies and advised top-level executives across various industries. In this show, you’ll find practical insights to help you succeed as a leader in today’s business environment. If you’re serious about developing your skills as an executive, this is the place for you. Join me in today’s episode as we dive into this topic.

The Enemy’s Tactics

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but I do believe in a higher-level conspiracy as described by Jesus: the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. There’s a force at work trying to keep Christians in poverty, using deception and subtle lies. The enemy is aware of our potential if we fully realize the resources and impact we have.

One of the primary ways the enemy operates is by twisting God’s word. This tactic dates back to the Garden of Eden when the serpent twisted God’s words to Eve. Similarly, today, scriptures are often misinterpreted or taken out of context to create limiting beliefs. For instance, the scripture “The love of money is the root of all sorts of evil” is often misunderstood as “money is the root of all evil,” leading to a subconscious belief that acquiring wealth is inherently wrong.

Another tool the enemy uses is paralyzing self-doubt, often masked as humility or wisdom. While it’s good to be humble and wise, these virtues should not cause you to doubt yourself. Many Christians are taught to question their God-given desires and dreams, leading to inaction. This self-doubt is a strategy of the enemy to delay progress and keep you from fulfilling your purpose.

Christians often abdicate responsibility for their dreams and desires, waiting on God or others to make decisions for them. While guidance is valuable, it’s essential to take ownership of your choices. Abdicating responsibility leads to inaction and prevents you from pursuing the dreams God has placed in your heart.

Judgment of Wealthy People

The enemy also uses the judgment of wealthy people to keep Christians in poverty. If you judge and despise wealthy individuals, your subconscious mind will never allow you to become what you despise. Respect and appreciate the achievements of others, even if they don’t align with your beliefs or actions.

To overcome these limiting beliefs, we need to expose and address them. Jesus came to give us life abundantly, and by aligning our mindset with this truth, we can move forward into our purpose.

Success Challenge of the Week

Let’s end with a challenge. Pray this simple prayer with me, and mean it with all your heart:

“God, I want to experience the abundant life that Jesus came to give me. Expose the mindsets that are holding me back. Break off the chains of poverty. I am going to become all that you created me to be, in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
