The Titanic: A Metaphor for Financial Barriers
Growing up, I couldn’t watch the movie Titanic. There were a few reasons it made me uncomfortable, but the primary one was how depressing it was. I could identify so much with Jack, walking around on the lower decks of the Titanic, looking up into the higher levels, imagining the influencers, the movers and shakers, and the people commanding so much wealth and income. Jack’s struggle and ultimate fate felt like a powerful metaphor for how many of us feel about our financial situations.
Maybe you’ve felt that way too, wondering what’s going on inside those rooms where wealth is created and managed, and why it seems so inaccessible. It’s like trying to ascend to those levels only to be met with a “no admittance” sign, reminding you that you’re not welcome.
Changing Your Beliefs About Wealth
One of the biggest hurdles to achieving wealth is our ingrained beliefs about it. Many of us were taught to despise the wealthy, seeing them as villains or assuming they obtained their wealth through nefarious means. This belief system is deeply ingrained in us, perpetuated by media and society. However, you will never allow yourself to become what you despise. If you live your life despising wealthy people, you will subconsciously sabotage your own chances of becoming wealthy.
My wife and I have had to be very intentional about this. Even if we don’t agree with everything that an ultra-wealthy person says or does, we still respect and admire them for their financial success. We aspire to generate great wealth for our family, and despising those who have achieved that will only hinder our own progress.
Adopting the Wealthy Mindset
The belief systems of the ultra-wealthy are crucial to their success. One key mindset is understanding that everything you need or desire is already available to you. This contrasts sharply with the poor and middle-class mindset, which often fails to recognize the value of what they already have.
Consider the story of the poor, old man who lived his whole life in poverty, unaware that a priceless painting was hanging on his wall. This man had everything he needed to pursue his dreams, but he didn’t recognize its value. This illustrates the mindset of the wealthy: recognizing and leveraging the value of what you already have.
This concept is even supported in the Bible. Jesus said, “To him who has, more will be given; to him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” This might sound harsh, but it’s about mindset. Those who believe they have abundance will attract more, while those who believe they lack will lose even what little they have.
Ephesians 1:4 says that before the foundation of the world, God knew you and called you for a purpose. This means that everything you need to fulfill your purpose is already here on earth. God has orchestrated everything in advance, ensuring that all you need to do is go out and find it.
Success Challenge of the Week
Let’s put this mindset into practice with a success challenge. Take a post-it note and write down a dollar amount that represents a large sum to you, an amount that would cover all your needs and enable you to move forward with your purpose. Then write, “Everything I need has already been provided.” Place this note in your wallet. Every time you reach for your wallet, say it out loud. This will help ingrain this mindset into your daily thoughts.
